Fact Check Update

Obama HQ 9/26/08 10:22 PM Amanda Scott Comments

Here are some more fact checks on the Iraq war and Afghanistan…

Fact Check on the Surge:

McCain: ?Senator Obama said the surge could not work, said it would increase sectarian violence, said it was doomed to failure. Recently on a television program he said it exceeded our wildest expectations, but yet after conceding that, he still says that he would oppose the surge if he had to decide that again today.?
Obama has repeatedly said that while the surge could help to reduce violence in Iraq, it did not change the political dynamic in Iraq

Fact Check on the threat in Afganistan:??

The Facts: McCain has ignored the threat in Afganistan and thinks Iraq is the central front in the war on terror
The Facts: Obama has been calling for more troops in Afganistan far longer than McCain

Fact Check on Committee Hearings

McCain: ?Senator Obama is the chairperson of a committee that oversees NATO that is in Afghanistan. To this day he has never had a hearing. That’s remarkable.?
The Facts: The full Foreign Relations Committee, not Obama’s subcommittee holds hearings on NATO’s role in Afganistan and Obama chaired a full Foreign Relations Committee hearing that discussed the issue

The Facts on the 2005 Energy Bill:

McCain attacked Obama for voting for ‘corporate welfare’ for oil companies. In fact, the bill Obama voted for raised taxes on oil companies by $300 million over 11 years while providing $5.8 billion in subsidies for renewable energy, energy efficiency and alternative fuels.

The Facts on Obama’s Tax Votes:

McCain: “He has voted in the United States Senate to increase taxes on people who make as low as $42,000.”

FactCheck.org has called this claim “simply false.” A family of four with income up to $90,000 would not have been affected. Even a single mother with one child would have been able to make $58,650 without being affected.

The Facts on the Iraq War:

The Facts: John McCain was one of the Bush Administration’s leading cheerleaders and supporters on the Iraq War..
