Mayer: Justice Department Lawyer Says Lunatics Running the Country

Jane Mayer, author of The Dark Side, sat down with Bill Moyers on Friday to talk about the “atmosphere of intimidation” in the White House regarding the authorization of torture at Guantanamo. According to Mayer, some Justice Department lawyers were so scared of being wiretapped by their own government they actually developed a system of talking in codes.
Here you had the top layers on our country—some of whom were conservative—sitting in on White House meetings and claiming that “lunatics had taken over the country.” And yet they too afraid of Vice President Cheney to do anything about it.
